Biography

Stilian Petrov (born July 5, 1979 in Montana, Bulgaria) is a Bulgarian football (soccer) player who plays for the Bulgarian national team as a midfielder, and also currently plays for Celtic in the Scottish Premier League.

Petrov has become known for his solid performances in midfield for both Celtic and Bulgaria. He is now captain of the national team and led his side to Euro 2004 where he was sent off during a match against Denmark. He has appeared over 50 times for his country.

Petrov is currently the longest serving Celtic player in the team. He has recently signed a contract extending his stay with Celtic until summer 2009, silencing rumours of a possible move to England or Spain for the time being.

In 2005 Petrov wrote his autobiography with the assistance of Sunday Mail sports journalist Mark Guidi entitled "You Can Call Me Stan", in reference to his nickname Stan, a shortened form of his Christian name Stilian. In the book, he uses the spelling "Stiliyan", and describes how this is in fact the correct spelling.
