Javier Portillo (born March 30, 1982 in Aranjuez) is a Spanish
football player who currently plays for Club Brugge on loan from
Real Madrid.
Portillo first broke into football defending them the colors of
C.D. San Isidro, where it was clear that scoring goals did not
have secrets for this forward. He was signed by Real Madrid in
1994-95 season and was entered in the Infantile B. In a moment,
Portillo demonstrated why it had future in the club: 42 goals in
League and 33 more in other matches. The following year, it
would do 79 and 68, respectively. During seven consecutive
seasons he would lead the league in scoring on whatever level he
was at: infantile, youth, cadet. All together, scoring more
goals in the Madrid youth system then Raul Gonzalez
Portillo's scoring took him to combine minutes with the Third
and Second B squads in the 2000-01 season: he would score 29
goals with the former in 18 matches, and 18 in 14 with the
latter. He made his debut in the UEFA Champions League in Greece,
against Panathinaikos.
Javier Portillo's father once blamed Real Madrid star Raul
Gonzalez for Portillos time on the Madrid first team. Portillo
was being groomed as Raul's successor, and with Raul having much
pull with coaches and officials at Madrid, he managed to keep
Portillo on the bench. Lack of first team action saw Portillo
lose his spark and was loaned out to Fiorentina where he had a
disappointing season at Fiorentina, he was brought back to
Madrid, only to be then loaned out again to Brugge. Madrid now
boast Raúl González, Ronaldo Luís Nazário de Lima, Robinho,
Julio Baptista, and Antonio Cassano as their strikeforce.
