Biography

Quinton Fortune (born May 21, 1977 in Cape Town) is a South African football player. He was purchased by Manchester United from Atletico Madrid on August 1, 1999. He made his first appearance for the club on August 30, 1999 against Newcastle United.

Fortune was initially brought to United as cover for Ryan Giggs and was thought of primarily as an attacking left-sided midfielder. Fortune has, however, proved himself a capable and dedicated performer in a number of positions. It is Fortune's strength as a defender, rather than his qualities as an attacker, that Sir Alex Ferguson depends most on, and Fortune has often been deployed as an uncompromising central midfielder or a solid, no-nonsense left-back in recent seasons.

Former United captain Roy Keane revealed in an interview that Fortune was always his first pick during five-a-side games in training. There is hardly any higher praise than this, with Keane notoriously critical of even his own team-mates. Keane perhaps recognises in Fortune the high standards and professionalism that are expected of a Manchester United player.

Fortune also plays for South Africa, and played in the 1998 and the 2002 World Cups.

Fortune has also set up a football club in South Africa called FC Fortune.
